Home-based Education
(Homeschool)

Are you considering providing a nonpublic home-based education (homeschool) for your child? Colorado law C.R.S. 22-33-104.5(3)(e) states that “Any parent establishing a nonpublic home-based educational program shall provide written notification of the establishment of said program to a school district within the state fourteen days prior to the establishment of said program and each year thereafter if the program is maintained.”
You can download the School District 27J Notification of Intent to Homeschool here. (this would be a link to the PDF). Once the form is completed, please return it to Julie Small, Homeschool Coordinator, 18551 E. 160th Ave., Brighton, CO 80601.
Parents of homeschooled students are responsible for ensuring that their student(s) receives appropriate educational programming.

This is only an excerpt from C.R.S. 22-33-104.5 Home-based education - legislative declaration - definitions - guidelines. Please read the entire state statute for additional regulations pertaining to home-based education.
(3)(c) A nonpublic home-based educational program shall include no less than one hundred seventy-two days of instruction, averaging four instructional contact hours per day.
(d) A nonpublic home-based educational program shall include, but need not be limited to, communication skills of reading, writing, and speaking, mathematics, history, civics, literature, science, and regular courses of instruction in the constitution of the United States as provided in section 22-1-108.
(e) Any parent establishing a nonpublic home-based educational program shall provide written notification of the establishment of said program to a school district within the state fourteen days prior to the establishment of said program and each year thereafter if the program is maintained. The parent in charge and in control of a nonpublic home-based educational program shall certify, in writing, only a statement containing the name, age, place of residence, and number of hours of attendance of each child enrolled in said program.
As a reminder, Colorado law (C.R.S. 22-33-104.5(3)(f)) requires that each child participating in a non-public, home-based (“homeschool”) educational program be evaluated using a nationally standardized achievement test during grades 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11. If your student is in any of the grades noted, please submit test results to the District no later than June 30 of the current school year.
